The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team remained perfect in the NTL as they defeated Towanda, 51-44 on Thursday, January 8.
Towanda jumped on top 6-0, but the Green Hornets fought right back, leading 12-9 after one quarter. Wellsboro put together a big second quarter as they outscored Towanda 22-14 to take a 34-23 lead at the half. Towanda would regain some ground in the third quarter as the outscored the Hornets 13-9, but Wellsboro would hold on down the stretch for the victory.
Senior Kieron Smethers led the Hornets with a 14 points and 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Senior Michael Pietropola also scored 14 points, giving him 204 for the season and 926 for his career. Junior Dawson Prough was the third Hornet in double figures are he scored 10 points.
Senior Jake Mitchell scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds, Freshman Quinn Henry had three points, and Sophomore Brandon Lamphier scored two points to round out the scoring.
In the JV game, the Hornets won 61-32 to improve to 5-3. Sophomore Alden Weiner led the team with 10 points as all the young Hornets scored in the game.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 8-1 (3-0 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Saturday, January 10 as they host rival Mansfield.
