The Wellsboro Middle School basketball teams both hosted and defeated Liberty Tuesday night.

In the boys game, the A team won 41-16. Dalton Prough led the way with 17 points, Collin Pietropola had 8, Jacob Singer added 6, Cole Cavanaugh had 4, and Brandon Lamphier, Bryon Callahan and Alden Weiner each had 2 points.

In the B game, the Hornets won 30-4. With the win, the boys team improves to 4-3.

In the girls game, the Lady Hornets beat Liberty 35-17. Rachael Tuttle lead all scorers with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Autum Kitajima added 6 points, 3 steals, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Lizzie Poirier chipped in 4 points and 4 rebounds. Janessa Davis, Jessica Grab, Brianne Keane, and Sydney Tremper added 2 points each. Hope Wilkinson had 2 rebounds and 1 steal, while Kaeli Butters added 6 rebounds and 1 steal, with Alley Drew adding 1 point, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal.

"We had some defensive breakdowns in the first half that lead to some uncontested baskets for Liberty," said head coach Darrell Morris. "Liberty came ready to play and outhustled us in the first half to keep the game close.

"We settled down after halftime and held Liberty scoreless in the 3rd quarter. We did a much better job of passing the ball in the second half and got some good looks at that basket, many of which we were able to convert on."

With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 5-4, and the B team improves to 3-2 with a 14-5 win.

Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday, March 13 as they travel to Coudersport.
