The Wellsboro Junior High Softball team suffered a 12-9 defeat in 7 innings Monday at Northeast Bradford.
"The Hornets played a solid game and battled hard," first-year head coach Kristen Lanphear said. "They hit well but fell just short. It was a well-played ball game despite a loss."
Four Lady Hornets had multiple hits in the game, led by Brooke Coolidge, Riley Lanphear and Madison Zeyn, who all went 3-for-4 at the plate. Harper Bourret went 2-for-4 and Rachel Weaver went 1-for-4.
Coolidge scored 3 runs in the game, Bourret crossed home plate twice, and Ryleigh Sporer, Weaver, Lanphear, and Zeyn all scored once.
Weaver threw a complete game, allowing 11 hits with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts in the loss. Coolidge, Sporer and Lanphear all had multiple put outs on the field. Bourett also contributed to solid defense.
Last Friday Wellsboro took a doubleheader over Canton, rallying to win the first game, 12-10. They later took the second game 22-16.
In game one Wellsboro trailed by as many as 5 runs before a Lanphear walk-off to center scored the winning runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sporer, Coolidge, Weaver and Zeyn all had 2 hits in the game while Bourett, Tegan Wheeler, Lanphear, and Devan Fairbanks added solo hits. Sporer, Coolidge and Weaver all scored three times, Bourett and Lanphear scored twice, and Wheeler, Fairbanks and Zeyn scored once.
Weaver got the win on the mound, allowing 8 hits with 11 walks and 6 strikeouts.
In game two Wellsboro's offense combined for 22 hits with Coolidge and Bourett having four hits apiece. Sporer and Taeber Rodriguez had 3 hits each, Lanphear and Kyerra Heck produced 2 hits and Weaver, Wheeler, Fairbanks and Emily Harsch had solo hits. Rodriguez drove in three runs, Sporer, Coolidge, and Lanphear drove in 2 runs each, and Bourett, Weaver and Heck drove in solo runs.
Lanphear picked up the win on the mound, allowing 13 hits with 6 walks and 4 strikeouts.
Wellsboro (6-5) is back in action Saturday against Wyalusing.
