Young Lady Hornet Softball Team Splits With Athens

The Wellsboro Junior High Softball team split of high-scoring games with Athens Monday afternoon.

Athens took the first game 18-15 in four innings. The young Lady Hornets combined for 10 hits in the game, led by Hailey Stevens's 3-for-4 performance to go with here 2 RBIs. Ryleigh Sporer and Brooke Coolidge were both 2-for-4 and drove in 3 runs. Harper Bourret and Rachel Weaver both finished 1-for-4, Taeber Rodriguez was 1-for-3, Kyerra Heck was 1-for-2 and Devan Fairbanks was 1-for-1. Sporer, Bourret, Stevens, Rodriguez, Heck and Madison Zeyn scored twice while Coolidge, Weaver, and Fairbanks touched home plate once.

Weaver allowed 11 runs on 6 hits to go with 6 walks and a strikeout in a losing effort in two innings of work. Riley Lanphear threw the final two innings, aloowing 7 runs on 5 hits with 6 walks.

Wellsboro rallied in game two to win 15-11 in four innings. Coolidge weent 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in 3 runs while weaver finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Lanphear and Stevens both finished 2-for-3, and Bourret, Sporer, Rodriguez, and Heck all had solo hits. Sporer, Coolidge, Bourret and Weaver all scored 3 runs apiece, Stevens crossed home plate twice, and Rodriguez and Lanphear scored once.

Lanphear started the game on the mound and threw two innings, allowing 7 runs on 1 hit with 8 walks and 4 strikeouts. Heck allowed 4 runs on 4 hits with 3 strikeouts in one inning of work before Weaver closed out the game and got the win with 1 hit, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts.

"Overall, both we really great games," first-year head coach Kristen Lanphear said. "The team played well, supported each other, and each player stepped into their role."

The Lady Hornets (3-3) travel to Cowanesque Valley this afternoon.
