South Williamsport struck early, often, and scored five of their seven touchdowns from the ground as they cruised to a 49-6 victory over Wellsboro on Friday night.
In total, the Mounties rushed for 296 yards (7.6 per carry) while compiling 418 yards of total offense.
South scored on six of their nine first-half drives, while the Hornets turned that ball over four times, to enact the mercy rule and taking a 42-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Garrett Lorson (3, 52, 53) scored three times in the half while Eli White (2, 73) scored twice. The Mounties' final first-half touchdown was a 15-yard pass from Cole Gerber to Levi Butler. Gerber also threw another touchdown pass to end the third quarter, a 25-yarder to Neeko Bowen.
Wellsboro's lone touchdown came on their first drive of the second half. The Hornets put together a 10-play, 73-yard drive that consumed nearly seven minutes of game time. After receiving the kick, Wellsboro picked up four first downs through the air. Highlighted by passes from sophomore Derrick Blasz to fellow sophomore Christian Main, freshman Grady Morral and seniors Gideon Lawton and Max Mascho.
Main started with a 10-yarder, followed by a 4-yard reception by Mascho before Morral caught a 32-yard reception to the South 25. Blasz then hit Lawton on back-to-back passes along the Wellsboro sideline, the second being a 3-yard touchdown.
Gerber finished 6-of-12 through the air for 120 to lead South Williamsport while Lorson (143) and White (100) both finished with 100-yard games on the ground. Butler hauled in 5 passes for 95 yards.
Blasz led the Hornets by completing 6-of-11 passes for 71 yards and a touchdown while junior Griffin Morral led the team's ground attack in the first half on 8 carries for 65 yards. He also completed 6 passes for 67 yards.
Grady Morral led the Hornets' receiving corps with 2 catches for 44 yards. Main caught 3 passes for 35 yards, Mascho added 3 receptions for 23 yards, and Lawton finished with 2 grabs for 13 and a score. Juniors Kody Enck (15) and Reed Richardson (8) also caught passes.
Richardson finished with 6 tackles, sophomore Colton Hauser and Griffin Morral made 4 tackles each, and Morral also had an interception.
The loss drops Wellsboro to 3-6 (3-4 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action next Friday, for Senior Night, against rival North Penn-Mansfield in the Morton F. Jones Trophy game. Wellsboro won last year's game, 48-10.
