Towanda edged Wellsboro 5-3 as the Lady Hornets celebrated senior Harleigh Cleveland on Thursday afternoon.
"I'm proud of how Harleigh has battled this year," head coach Greg Carr said. "She's a hard worker, dedicated to the team and filled her senior captain role with spirit."
The Lady Knights struck quickly out of the gate after Maris Cobb hit a one-out double. Wellsboro evened the score as freshman Haylie Smith drew a lead off walk and later scored. Towanda scored a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd to break the tie and lead 3-1, however the Lady Hornets answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Smith drew her second walk of the game then sophomore Rylee Coolidge hit into a fielder's choice in the next at bat to put two runners on. Sophomore Adelyn Frantz ripped a single to right to score Smith, and Coolidge scored on an error on the throw to tie the game.
Towanda again broke the tie with a runs in the 6th and 7th innings while Leila Cobb retired three of the final six Wellsboro batters to hold on for the win.
Coolidge and Frantz had the Lady Hornets' only two hits in the game. Cobb finished the game with 14 strikeouts and just two walks for the Lady Knights.
Frantz scattered three hits in 7 innings of work, walking 4 and striking out 15.
Wellsboro (5-8, 3-7 NTL Large School Division) travels to Canton later this afternoon.
