Hughesville broke a 1-1 tie in the 4th inning with a pair of runs to edge the Lady Hornets 3-1 Saturday afternoon in non-league softball action.
The Spartans scored in the top of the 1st to take an early lead, however Wellsboro quickly tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning.
Freshman Haylie Smith led the game off with a base hit. A base knock from sophomore Adelyn Frantz put two runners on with one out then freshman Gena Fleming loaded the bases on a walk. Sophomore Teagan Novinger brought Smith home as she was hit by a pitch.
The game remained tied until the top of the 4th when Hughesville plated two runs. Addison Henninger walked then Eliza Kile crossed home plate as a courtesy runner, breaking the tie. Kenna Fisher also drew a walk then scored on a ground out by Lyla Kinney.
Smith (2-for-5), Coolidge (1-for-4) and Frantz (1-for-3) made up the Lady Hornets' 4 hits in the game.
Frantz started the game on the mound and went the first five innings, allowing just one hit to go along with 7 walks and 6 strikeouts. Fleming came on for the final two innings, also allowing one hit with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.
Wellsboro falls to 5-6 (3-5 NTL Large School Division). The team hosts Athens on Tuesday.
