The Wellsboro Junior High Softball team opened their season Monday with a pair of three-inning victories over Sayre.
The young Lady Hornets won the first game 22-7. Wellsboro scored 13 runs in the top of the 1st to take the early lead, however Sayre battled back and got all seven of their runs in the bottom half of the inning. Wellsboro's defense tightened up after that point, holding the young Lady Redskins scoreless.
Harper Bourret led Wellsboro at the plate, going 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored. Rachel Weaver finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and 3 runs, Devan Fairbanks and Ryleigh Sporer were both 2-for-4 and Brooke Coolidge, Riley Lanphear, Hailey Stevens, Kyerra Heck, and Madison Zeyn added the remaining hits. Fairbanks scored 3 times and Sporer crossed home plate twice.Stevens, Heck and Zeyn also scored twice in the game and Coolidge added a single run.
Weaver got the win on the mound, allowing one hit while walking 7 and striking out 6.
In game two Wellsboro continued their momentum from the first game and used it to win, 16-1.
Sayre scored right out of the gate but Wellsboro answered back right away with 8 runs in the bottom of the 1st. They went on to add 8 more runs in the second.
Wellsboro produced nine hits in the game, led by Heck's 2-for-3 plate performance. She also scored twice. Coolidge, Sporer, Bourett, Tegan Wheeler, Lanphear, Stevens, and Taeber Rodriguez all added single hits. Wheeler scored three times while Coolidge, Lanphear, Stevens and Rodriguez scored twice in addition to Heck, while Sporer, Bourret and Weaver crossed home plate one time each.
Lanphear got the win on the mound. She struck out three and walked three.
Wellsboro (2-0) hosts Williamson Saturday morning.
