Sophomore Adelyn Frantz struck out 10 batters to surpass 300 strikeouts for her career to help the Wellsboro Varsity Softball team edged Canton, 7-6, Thursday afternoon.

Frantz has now struck out 168 batters this year, placing her 2nd all-time for a single season, and currently sits at 301 for her career.

The Lady Hornets dug themselves out of an early 2-0 hole with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 2nd. With one out sophomore Kaylee Frazier singled and junior Mazie Johnson drew a walk to put two runners on. Freshman Gena Fleming singled to left-center, scoring both Frazier and Johnson to tie the game at 2-all. Wellsboro took the lead in the third as Frantz tripled to right to lead off the inning, then scored on a infield hit from Morral.

Canton plated four runs in the top of the 4th to retake the lead at 6-3, however Wellsboro's bats remained hot in the bottom half of the inning.

Sophomore Rylee Coolidge kicked off the inning by drawing a one-out walk. Frantz followed with a double to score Coolidge, then Morral drew a walk to keep two runners on. In the next at bat, sophomore Teagan Novinger cleared the bases with a base hit to tie the game at 6-all.

Wellsboro's defense then retired the next six Canton batters in order, with Frantz striking out four of the six, keeping the game tied at 6-all heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Frantz led off the 6th with a base hit, then later scored the game-winner on a Novinger single.

Canton got a runner in scoring position in the top of the 7th on a triple, but Wellsboro's defense tightened and prevented the run to go on for the win.

Frantz led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored an RBI and two extra base hits. Novinger finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, Fleming was also 2-for-3 with a double and Morral was 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Raya Preston (2-for-3) and Tara Gilbert (2-for-3) led Canton at the plate. Jaylee Ward threw a complete game for the Lady Warriors, allowing 7 runs on 9 hits with 8 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Wellsboro improves to 7-9 (4-8 NTL Large School Division) with the win and travels to Coudersport Saturday morning.
