The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team erased a 4-game losing streak with an 8-3 win over Sayre on Saturday, March 29.
Trailing 2-0 after the top of the 1st the Lady Hornets plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. With one out, freshman Rylee Coolidge and senior Paige Logsdon drew back-to-back walks and were driven home the next at bat on a home run by freshman Teagan Novinger.
Both teams were scoreless in the 2nd, however the Lady Redskins added a solo run in the top of the 3rd to tie the game back up a 3-all. From that point on Wellsboro's defense locked in and the offense went on a 5-0 run to close out the game.
Coolidge crossed home plate for the 2nd time in the game in the bottom of the third to put Wellsboro back in front after drawing a one-out walk. Later in the 5th, freshman Adelyn Frantz reached on an error to lead off the inning, then scored on a double by Logsdon. Logsdon then scored on a ground out by Novinger, putting the Lady Hornets up 6-3.
Wellsboro's final two runs came in the bottom of the 6th. Freshman Kaylee Frazier and junior Harleigh Cleveland both hit singles and both scored.
Frantz, Logsdon, Novinger, Frazier and Cleveland accounted for the Lady Hornets' five hits in the game while Logsdon earned the win from the mound, allowing just the 3 runs in a complete game on 7 hits with 4 walks and 10 strikeouts.
Wellsboro (1-4, 1-4 NTL Large School Division) travels to Wyalusing Tuesday.
