Lady Hornets Win 2nd Straight; Edge Canton, 12-9

The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team edged out Canton 12-9 for their 2nd straight win, and their 3rd win overall, on Monday, April 21.

After an early run by Jaylee Ward to put the Lady Warriors ahead 1-0, the Lady Hornets started strong in their opening inning with 4 runs of their own. A home run by freshman Adelyn Frantz, back-to-back singles by freshman Rylee Coolidge and senior Paige Logsdon, and a walk by freshman Delaney Morral put Wellsboro up 4-1.

Canton rallied back in the top of the 3rd with three runs to tie the game up at 4-all, then retook the lead in the top of the 4th with three runs to go ahead, 7-4. Wellsboro answered with a pair of runs, one each by Coolidge and Logsdon, to cut the lead down to 7-6. The Lady Warriors' final two runs came in the top of the 5th to make it a three-run, 9-6 lead. The Lady Hornets, however, went on a 6-0 run over the final two innings to complete the comeback.

Senior Arianah Lawton, freshman Hannah Taylor, and Logsdon all scored in the bottom of the 5th to tie the game up at 9-all, then sophomore Mazie Johnson, Lawton, and Frantz scored in the 6th to push. the Lady Hornets to the win.

Logsdon led Wellsboro at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Coolidge finished 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs and freshman Teagan Novinger was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Frantz, Johnson, Lawton, Taylor, and freshman Kaylee Frazier added the remaining hits with Frazier driving in a pair of runs.

Frantz pitched a complete game on the mound, allowing 9 runs on 6 hits with 7 walks and 13 strikeouts.

Alyssa May led Canton at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and 3 RBIs. Ward earned the loss, going 5 & 2/3 innings, allowing 8 runs (4 earned) on 9 hits with 4 walks and 2 strikeouts. Tara Gilbert threw 1/3 of an inning, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 3 hits with a walk.

Wellsboro improves to 3-5 overall and 2-5 in the NTL Large School Division standings. The team hosts Troy this afternoon.
