Lady Hornets Fall To Athens, 10-4

Athens went on a 9-3 scoring run after a 1-1 first inning for both teams to defeat Wellsboro 10-4 on the softball diamond on Tuesday, March 25.

The Lady Wildcats plated one run to start the game, but the Lady Hornets answered back right away in their first at bat. With one out, freshman Rylee Coolidge drew a walk and later scored on a base hit from freshman Teagan Novinger to tie up the game.

In their next plate appearances Athens put together a 4-run 2nd inning that led to an 8-0 run over the next 4 innings to give themselves a 9-1 lead.

Wellsboro's bats heated back up in the 6th inning, highlighted by a solo home run by Novinger. Junior LeAnna Fuentes also scored in the inning after drawing a walk to cut the lead to 9-3. Freshman Delaney Morral drove in Fuentes.

Athens added one more run in the top of the 7th to pad their lead to 10-3 before Coolidge scored for the second time in the game in the bottom of the 7th after a ground-out RBI by Novinger.

Senior Paige Logsdon finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a double to lead the Lady Hornets while Novinger was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Morral and senior Madelynn Losinger added Wellsboro's remaining two hits in the game.

Freshman Adelyn Frantz started and threw 5 innings in the loss, allowing 9 runs on 9 hits with 7 walks and 6 strikeouts. Logsdon came on for the final two innings, allowing 1 run on 1 hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Madalyn Hiley was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs to lead Athens, and also pucked up the win on the mound. She allowed 4 runs on 7 hits with 2 walks and 12 strikeouts.

Wellsboro falls to 0-3 (0-3 NTL). The team is back in action Thursday afternoon against Towanda.
