The Wellsboro Varsity Wrestling Team won fix of six matches in Saturday's "Battle On The Border" Tournament at Williamson.
Wellsboro started out the day with a 38-18 win over Campbell-Savona. The Hornets defeated Alfred-Almond 35-24 in round two, and Avoca 32-18 to finish the morning rounds at 3-0. After a bye in the fourth round Wellsboro edged Addison 35-34 and defeated Fillmore 41-30 before falling 54-18 to South Williamsport.
"Our boys wrestled well this afternoon and I’m proud of their effort," said head coach Bryce Bitner. "They all fought hard and wrestled some great matches."
Against Campbell-Savona, junior Mason Nowak won by tech fall at 139, sophomore Wyatt Kilburn won a 14-9 decision at 152, seniors Silas Mickey (160), Evan Ingerick (172) and Ryder Bowen (189), and junior Jayden Dumm (215) all won by pin, and junior Hayden Stevens won by forfeit at 285.
Kilburn (152) started out a six-match win streak by scoring a 23-8 tech fall, freshman Gavin Carson (160), Ingerick (172) and Stevens (285) all scored pin falls, and Bowen (189) and Dumm (215) picked up forfeits.
In their third match of the day against Avoca, Nowak (139) won a 24-12 major decision, Kilburn (152) and Bowen (189) scored tech falls, Mickey (160) and Stevens (285) pinned their opponents, and Ingerick (172) won by forfeit.
Against Addison, the Knights opened up winning the first four matches to jump out to a 24-0 lead. The Hornets then took the next six of eight matches to secure the win. Nowak (139), Dumm (215) and Stevens (285) scored forfeits, Mickey (160) and Ingerick (172) added pin falls, and Bowen (189) won a 15-0 tech fall.
In their win over Fillmore, Bowen (189), Dumm (215) and Stevens (285) started out the match with back-to-back-to-back forfeits. Nowak (139) secured a 17-1 tech fall, Kilburn (152) and Mickey (160) won via pin fall, and Ingerick (172) closed out the match with a forfeit victory.
In their final match of the day against South Williamsport the Mounties won the opening match to take a 6-0 lead before Stevens (285) earned a forfeit to tie everything up at 6-all. The Mounties then won seven matches to build a 48-6 lead. Mickey (160) and Bowen (189) won Wellsboro's final two matches of the day.
Wellsboro (5-13, 0-6 NTL) travels to Muncy for a non-league match this evening.
