Senior Marek Mascho and sophomore Kody Enck both had a pair of interceptions, and Enck returned both of his for touchdowns, to help Wellsboro roll past Canton, 49-7 in their annual Homecoming game Friday.
Mascho finished with 117 yards and a touchdown on the ground to go with his two interceptions while Enck racked up 102 interception return yards, tying him for 2nd all-time with Jeff Coolidge (Thomas Edison in 1975). He also caught a 26-yard touchdown from sophomore Griffin Morral.
Freshman Mason Abplanalp also had an interception return for 25 yards.
Wellsboro did all their damage in the first half to enact the second half Mercy Rule clock. On their very first possession Wellsboro marched right down the field in 11 plays, culminating in a 6-yard run by Morral. The snap on the extra point was high, but the Hornets led 6-0. On their next drive it only took Wellsboro six plays to find the end zone as Senior Dylan Copp punched the ball in from 3 yards out. Mascho ran in the two-point conversion, putting the Hornets up 14-0.
Mascho ended Canton's ensuing drive with his first interception of the evening, then Morral and Enck connected on a 26-yard pass one play later, to push the lead to 21-0 with 2:03 remaining in the first quarter.
The Hornets picked right back up where they left off to start the 2nd quarter with two more touchdowns, both Enck interception returns. His first one, with 11:46 remaining in the half, was 61 yards. His second, with 10:41 left, went for 41 yards to push the score to 35-0.
Mascho scored from 22 yards out on the Hornets' next offensive possession after Enck's interceptions, to make it 42-0 before the Warriors found the scoreboard with 5 minutes left in the half. Rylan Wesneski caught a 22-yard pass from Owen Moore and Alexis McRoberts made the extra point to cut the lead down to 42-7.
Morral capped scoring on the Hornets' next drive on a 22-yard run.
Mascho's 117 yards led all rushers on the evening. Morral finished with 75 yards on 8 carries to go along with his 47 passing yards (3-for-3). Copp added 21 yards on 5 carries, senior Cole Knapp finished with 16 yards on 5 carries and Enck carried the ball once for 11 yards. Enck led the receiving corps with 26 yards while Mascho and Copp both had 11 yards each, and junior Max Mascho caught one pass for 10 yards.
Junior Levi Champaign had 6 tackles, Copp and sophomore Reed Richardson both made 4 stops apiece, and senior Hayden Stevens and sophomore Gavin Carson recorded sacks.
Owen Moore completed 9-of-17 passes for 161 yards to lead Canton. Brayden Tucker rushed 4 times for 30 yards and Ryder Route caught 3 passes for 93 yards.
The Hornets even up their season record to 4-4 (4-3 NTL Large School Division) following the win. The team is back in action next Friday for Senior Night as they take on Northwest Area (2-6, 1-5 NTL Small School Division).
