Wellsboro's Junior High Softball team split a doubleheader with Towanda at home on Wednesday, May 8.
Wellsboro won the first game 4-3 and lost the 2nd game 7-3.
In game one, the young Lady Hornets scored all 4 of their runs in the 2nd inning to take the early lead, then held off the Lady Knights, who scored single runs in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings.
Adelyn Frantz led Wellsboro at the plate, going 2-for-2 and scoring a run. Haylie Smith, Delaney Morral, Teagan Novinger, and Kaylee Frazier were also all 1-for-2. Morral, Frazier, and Madalynn Flannery added Wellsboro's remaining runs.
Wellsboro allowed just two hits by Towanda in the game as Frantz and Smith split time on the mound. Frantz threw 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 0 hits and 10 strikeouts. Smith threw the final inning, giving up 1 run on 2 hits with a walk and a strikeout.
In game two Wellsboro and Towanda were knotted up at 1-1 after the 1st inning and 3-3 after the 2nd, but the Lady Knights scored 4 unanswered runs in the 4th to claim the win.
Wellsboro had 3 hits in the 2nd game, one each by Paityn Biery, Genevieve Fleming, and Molly Doan. Flannery, Doan, and Paige Rush scored Wellsboro's runs.
Fleming threw 3 & 1/3 innings, allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits with 8 strikeouts. Smith threw the final 2/3 of the inning, striking out 2 with a walk and a hit.
Wellsboro (6-7) hosts rival North Penn-Liberty on Friday.
