The Wellsboro Junior High Softball team came up just short in a doubleheader loss to rival North Penn-Liberty in their final home games of the season on Friday, May 17.
In the first game one the young Lady Hornets nearly pulled off the upset, but fell 8-7. Wellsboro trailed 5-0 after the 2nd when they got their first run across home plate, but the Lady Mounties added another run in the top of the 3rd and two more in the 5th.
Trailing 8-1, Wellsboro scored six runs in the bottom of the 5th, closing the gap to 8-7 but couldn't complete the comeback.
Rylee Coolidge was 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored to lead Wellsboro at the plate while Genevieve Fleming and Adelyn Frantz were both 2-for-3 , with Frantz scoring 2 runs and both driving in runs. Hannah Taylor and Lacie Brutsman were both 1-for-2, Teagan Novinger was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Kya Lawton was 1-for-1 with an RBI and run scored.
Taylor, Kaylee Frazier, and Madalynn Flannery added runs.
In game two Wellsboro jumped out to the lead with a 5-run 2nd inning only to have Liberty tie the game up in the 4th with 5 runs. They scored the winning run one inning later.
Flannery was 2-for-3, Kendra Metcalf, Paityn Biery, and Emaleigh Hamblin were all 1-for-2, Haylie Smith was 1-for-3, and Isabella Dean was 1-for-1.
Smith, Hamblin, Dean, Biery, and Ariel Acevedo scored Wellsboro's runs and Hamblin, Dean, Biery, Flannery, and Metcalf drove in runs.
Wellsboro (6-9) travels to Troy on Monday.
