Junior Paige Logsdon hit a grand slam and drove in six runs to help the Lady Hornets to a 13-3 win in six innings over Canton on Saturday, April 6.
The win was the Lady Hornets' first of the season.
Freshman Ella Boyce and senior Abby Owlett both reached base to start the top of the 1st, then immediately scored as Logsdon flew out to score them both, putting the Lady Hornets up 2-0. Canton got a run back to cut the led in half, however the Lady Hornets maintained their 2-1 lead until the top of the 3rd.
Boyce singled to lead off the 3rd on a bunt, then advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and passed ball, and later scored on a Logsdon sac fly. Later in the inning sophomore Miya Kemp scored after freshman Bailee Confer singled.
Wellsboro led 4-1 heading into the top of the 4th where Logsdon hit a grand slam, scoring junior Madelynn Losinger, Boyce, and Owlett, increasing the lead to 8-1.
Canton got two more runs back, 1 each in the 4th and 5th innings to cut the lead down to 8-3, however Wellsboro's offense heated up again in the top of the 6th, producing 5 runs. Owlett, Logsdon, junior Arianah Lawton, senior Caralyn Warner, and sophomore Tegan Del Rio all scored, giving Wellsboro the 10-run win.
Logsdon finished 2-for-2 with the grand slam home run, 6 RBIs and 2 runs scored while Lawton finished 2-for-3 with a walk, and Losinger was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Del Rio was 1-for-2 with 2 walks and Warner and Boyce were both 1-for-3.
Confer got the win on the mound as she struck out 3 batters in 4 innings. She also walked 6, gave up 5 hits and 2 runs (1 earned). Logsdon came on in relief in the 5th, striking out 2 and walking one with 2 hits an a run scored.
Wellsboro improves to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the NTL Large School Division standings. The team is back in action at Sayre on Friday.
