Wellsboro suffered a 20-4 non-league loss to Hughesville in 5 innings on Thursday, May 9.
The Lady Spartans got to work quickly, scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st to take an early lead. Wellsboro answered back in the top of the 2nd with a run, scored by sophomore Tegan Del Rio, after she led off the inning with a base hit, cutting the lead to 2-1. Junior Madelynn Losinger drove in Del Rio with a base hit to right field.
Hughesville wasted little time adding more runs to the scoreboard with 5 in the 3rd, 11 in the 4th, and 2 more in the 5th.
Wellsboro scored their remaining 3 runs in the top of the 4th. Senior Caralyn Warner was hit by a pitch to start, then advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch and passed ball. Next at bat, sophomore LeAnna Fuentes scored Warner on a base knock, then later scored on a wild pitch. Losinger was also hit by a pitch in the next at bat and also scored.
Warner and Losinger both finished 1-for-2 at the plate and Del Rio and Fuentes were both 1-for-3.
Freshman Mazie Johnson started and threw the first 2 & 2/3 innings, allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 5 hits with 3 walks. Junior Paige Logsdon threw an inning and a third, allowing 11 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits with 3 walks and a strikeout. Freshman Bailee Confer pitched the final inning, giving up 2 runs with 2 walks and a strikeout.
Wellsboro (4-12, 1-11 NTL Large School Division) travels to Williamson this afternoon.
