The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team ended a six-game losing streak by defeating St. John Neumann 22-4 in 3 innings on Saturday, April 27 in non-league play.
Senior Abby Owlett drew a lead-off walk then later scored on a wild pitch to put the Lady Hornets up 1-0 early. Neumann answered in the bottom half of the inning with 2 runs to take their first lead of the game, however Wellsboro's bat would come alive in the next inning.
Wellsboro went through their lineup twice in the 2nd en route to scoring 15 runs to retake the lead at 16-2. Neumann got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but again, Wellsboro poured on the offense in the top of the 3rd. Wellsboro added six more runs to end the game early, highlighted by a home run from senior Caralyn Warner.
Freshman Mazie Johnson went 3-for-3 on the day to lead the Lady Hornets at the plate. She scored 3 runs and drove in 4. Warner finished 2-for-3 with 6 RBIs, sophomore Harleigh Cleveland was 1-for-2 with an RBI and scored 2 runs, and junior Paige Logsdon finished 1-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBIs.
Owlett (3), sophomore LeAnna Fuentes (2), freshmen Kaelyn Peterson, Logsdon (2), junior Arianah Lawton (3), freshman Bailee Confer (2), Warner (3), junior Madelynn Losinger (2), Johnson (3), and Cleveland (2) scored Wellsboro's runs.
Johnson threw a complete game 2-hitter with 4 strikeouts.
The win improves the Lady Hornets to 3-8 (1-8 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action on Monday at Towanda.
