The Wellsboro Junior High Football team dropped their first game of the year after Towanda edged them 8-6 on Thursday, September 14.
The loss snaps a six-game win streak dating back to September 22nd of last year.
"This was a tough loss. I know there is no replay in this level of football, but it would have really been nice today," said head coach Shane Mascho. "Towanda has a tough team that we knew would be a measuring stick to our progress. Our hard work the past few summers has payed off as we have closed the gap with them and have confidence we can compete with them."
Wellsboro fended off the Black Knights early as Christian Main intercepted a pass in the end zone, stalling their opening drive.
"Christian has been a welcome addition to the team," added Mascho. "Teams try to target him because of his size, but he has done nothing but make plays all year."
Wellsboro would get a touchdown called back on their next possession eventually having to punt, however they found the end zone on Griffin Morral 99-yard interception for a pick six. Kody Enck was ruled an inch short on the conversion attempt.
The Hornets' offense stalled through the second half and Towanda put together one scoring drive. On the conversion attempt, their ball carrier crossed the line by an inch to win the game.
Wellsboro (2-1) hosts Cowanesque Valley next Thursday.
