The Wellsboro Lady Hornet Softball team dropped their third straight game, falling 14-4 in 5 innings to Cowanesque Valley on Monday, May 8.
Wellsboro started the game off with the lead, getting senior Maddi Bordas on base with a walk and senior Jordyn Abernathy on by error. Sophomore Lexi Urena singled in the next at bat to score Bordas, then senior Rylie Boyce singled to score Abernathy, putting Wellsboro in front 2-0.
Cowanesque rallied in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game with a pair of runs. However, Wellsboro would answer back in the 2nd to retake the lead.
Senior Mariah Borden and freshman Tegan Del Rio reached by on an error and walk, respectively, putting two runners on. Urena singled to load the bases for Boyce, and Boyce smacked a two-run single, scoring Borden and Del Rio, putting Wellsboro up, 4-2.
From that point on, however, it was all Lady Indians as they scored 12 unanswered runs, two to tie it up at 4-4 after the 2nd, then 4 more in the 3rd and 4th innings, and capped the game with 2 in the 5th.
Urena and Boyce led Wellsboro at the plate, both going 2-for-3. Bordas and junior Abby Owlett were both 1-for-2 and Borden was 1-for-3. Boyce pitched a complete game, allowing 14 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits with 6 walks and 5 strikeouts.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 2-11 (2-10 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action this afternoon at Athens.
