A 10-run fifth inning by the Canton Lady Warriors sent Wellsboro home with a 15-5 season-opening loss in six innings on Friday, March 24.
The Lady Hornets started out strong, scoring two runs in the 1st to take an early lead. Senior Maddi Bordas led off with a walk and senior Jordyn Abernathy reached on an error. Both scored to put Wellsboro up 2-0. Canton rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game up, but the Lady Hornets rallied at the plate in the next inning to retake the lead.
Senior Mariah Borden led off the second with a base hit and later scored, Abernathy reached base on another error, then stole a base before sophomore Lexi Urena homered to give the Lady Hornets a 4-2 lead.
Canton would get a run back in the 4th to cut the lead to 4-3 heading into the 5th. The Lady Warriors plated 10 runs in the 5th then added two more runs in the 6th to close out the game.
Borden and senior Dresden Del Rio led Wellsboro at the plate, both going 2-for-3. Urena added Wellsboro's 5th hit of the afternoon. Urena pitched 5 and a third innings in a losing effort, allowing 11 runs on 4 hits with 6 walks and 8 strikeouts.
The Lady Hornets (0-1, 0-1 NTL Large School Division) are back on the field on Tuesday, March 28 at home against Williamson.
