The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team snapped their 5-game losing streak as they hung on to beat Athens, 10-9, for their 1st win of the season on Tuesday, April 11.
"The girls got the monkey off their back, head coach Greg Carr said. "We made some defensive changes that have upgraded our defense. We made the defensive plays today when we needed along with timely hitting. They are still playing with a lot of fire and guts regardless of their record. Hopefully this will turn turn things around for us."
Wellsboro found themselves in the hole 3-0 after the first inning but held the Lady Wildcats scoreless in both the top of the 2nd and 3rd innings. With one out seniors Maddi Bordas and Jordyn Abernathy drew back-to-back walks. Next at bat, sophomore Lexi Urena connected and sent the pitch over the outfield fence for a 3-run homer, tying the game up at 3-all. Wellsboro took the lead the next inning after junior Abby Owlett drew a walk and junior Caralyn Warner put down a bunt for a base hit, scoring Owlett to give Wellsboro a 4-3 lead.
Wellsboro again held Athens scoreless in the top of the 5th, then proceeded to add six more runs in the bottom half of the inning to pad their lead.
Urena led off the inning with a walk followed by a reach on error by senior Rylie Boyce. Senior Mariah Borden and Warner added base hits, freshman Tegan Del Rio and Bordas also reached base on errors. All six would score in the inning, pushing the lead to 10-3.
Athens got a pair of runs back in the top of the 6th to cut the lead in half, then added 4 more in the top of the 7th.
Senior Molly Ingerick and Warner were both 2-for-3 to lead the Lady Hornets at the plate while Urena and Abernathy were both 1-for-3 and Borden and Boyce were both 1-for-4. Urena had 3 RBIs on the afternoon.
Urena got the win on the mound, allowing 9 runs (5 earned) on 5 hits with 8 walks and 7 strikeouts. Boyce came on for the final inning, walking two and striking out one.
The win improves the Lady Hornets to 1-5 (1-4 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action Thursday at Northeast Bradford.
