A 6-run 2nd inning propelled the Canton Lady Warriors to a 7-4 win over the Wellsboro Varsity Softball team on Friday, March 25.
"I am encouraged because we played really well defensively," 1st year head coach Hannah Smith said. "We are young, but if we can stay consistent, I have high hopes for a good season."
In the bottom half of the 2nd the Lady Hornets got a run back on a solo home run by senior Emma Coolidge. Wellsboro's defense held Canton over the next two innings, but allowed a run in the 4th as Canton extended their lead to 7-1. The Lady Hornets would add two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning as freshman Alexandra Urena reached on an error to start, then junior Madaline Bordas drew a walk to put two on. Both would score to cut the lead to 7-3.
Later in the 6th Bordas hit a lead-off double and would eventually score Wellsboro's final run.
Freshman Paige Logsdon led the Lady Hornets at the plate, going 2-for-2 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Junior Rylie Boyce went 2-for-3 at the plate and also went the distance in the circle, allowing 7 runs on 7 hits with 3 strikeouts. Coolidge and Urena were both 1-for-3 and Bordas finished 1-for-4. Junior Molly Ingerick added a sacrifice fly and an RBI.
The loss starts out the Lady Hornets' season at 0-1 (0-1 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action on Tuesday, March 29 at Williamson.
