The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team combined for 11 hits and two home runs as they put together a 10-4 win against South Williamsport on Saturday, April 13.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to an early lead after the first inning as they played four runs. Junior Ryann Adams, sophomore Kerrah Clymer, junior Cathryn Brought, and senior Heidi Zuchowski all touched home plate. After a scoreless 2nd Wellsboro extended their lead to 5-0 with another run in the 3rd from Clymer.
South rallied to cut Wellsboro's lead to 5-4 with 2 runs in the 4th and 2 in the 5th, but then Clymer and sophomore Jena Boyce hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the 5th to put Wellsboro up 7-4. The Lady Hornets then added three more runs in the bottom of the 6th, by senior Hailey Neal, junior Nina Coolidge, and Adams, to go up 10-4.
South was unable to make up the distance in the top of the 7th, securing the Lady Hornets' 4th win of the season.
Clymer and Boyce each went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Lady Hornets on the afternoon, each hitting a home run. Clymer was a triple shy of the cycle and scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. Neal finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Brought, English, and Zuchowski added in the other hits.
Brought also drove in 2 runs and pitched a complete game, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits to go with 8 strikeouts.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 4-2 (3-1 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action tomorrow at home against Athens.
