The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team defeated Hughesville 2-1 on Thursday, May 16.
The win also qualified the Lady Hornets for the PIAA District IV Class AAA softball playoffs.
Trailing 1-0 after the 4th, Wellsboro added two runs in the 5th to take, and hold on to, the lead for the win. Senior Tiana Lecker led off the inning by reaching on error then sophomore Jena Boyce hit into a fielder's choice to put two runners on for junior Ryann Adams. Adams also hit into a fielder's choice, but drove in both Lecker and Boyce in the process.
Wellsboro mustered 5 hits on the evening with Boyce, junior Rileigh Gerges, and freshman Emma Coolidge tallying 1 hit each while senior Hailey Neal led at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance.
Junior Cathryn Brought pitched a complete game for the win, allowing 1 run (unearned) on 4 hits with 6 strikeouts.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 10-7 (8-5 NTL Large School Division). Wellsboro hosts Wyalusing later this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. then hosts Troy on Saturday morning to finish the regular season.
