The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team suffered a 1-0 road loss to Athens on Wednesday, May 8.
The Lady Hornets' woes at the plate continued as they were held to 4 hits (5 hits so far this week through two games) against the Lady Wildcats' Megan Bennett, coupled with 14 strikeouts.
Both teams went 1-2-3 through the first inning and Wellsboro was retired in order in the top of the 2nd. Emma Repsher led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk for Athens, advanced on a passed ball, then scored on an error for the game's only run. After that point on, however, the Lady Hornets' defense and junior Cathryn Brought allowed just two hits and prevented the Lady Wildcats from doing any more damage.
Wellsboro had chances to tie the game up starting in the 4th inning. Sophomore Jena Boyce led off and advanced all the way to third before being stranded. Later in the 5th senior Tiana Lecker doubled but was left stranded. Freshman Emma Coolidge had a hit in the 6th and Brought led off the 7th inning with a base hit, but 3 straight strikeouts ended the game.
Brought pitched a complete game allowing the single run (unearned) on 2 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets' record to 8-7 (7-5 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Friday, May 10 at Towanda.
