The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team picked up an opening day win in dominant fashion, beating Canton 12-1 in 5 innings on Monday, April 2.
The Lady Hornets cruised out to an early 5-0 lead after the first inning, then added three more runs in the second and four in the third to lead 12-0. Canton scored their lone run in the top of the fifth.
"It was a good game to start the season," said head coach Ron Brought. "The girls put up a crooked number in 3 of the 4 innings we batted. It was nice to finally play and compete."
Senior Sydney Tremper led the Lady Hornets with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with a double and RBI. Junior Hailey Neal was 1-for-1 with an RBI, and senior Kailee Clymer went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run. Sophomore Ryann Adams, junior Heidi Zuchowski, and freshman Jena Boyce also added hits, and Boyce stole two bases.
Tremper scored three runs, Zuchowski, Kerrah Clymer, and Kailee Clymer scored two runs each, and Brought, Adams, and Boyce all scored as well. Zuchowski and Brought also drove in two runs each.
Sophomore Cathryn Brought started on the mound and went the first four innings, allowing one hit and two walks on 75 pitches against 16 batters. Freshman Kerrah Clymer came on in relief for an inning. Against the four batters she faced, she struck out two and gave up a home run on 25 pitches.
