After dropping their first game of the season to rival North Penn-Liberty on Monday, the Wellsboro Varsity Softball team took out some frustrations on Athens in a 7-1 win on the road on Wednesday, April 11.
"Great team win tonight with contributions from every batter in the lineup," head coach Ron Brought said. "We gave our pitching an early lead and made some nice defensive plays throughout to secure the win."
The Lady Hornets wasted little time as sophomore Ryann Adams and senior Sydney Tremper had back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the first. Sophmore Cathryn Brought then doubled to score both Adams and Tremper, then was brought home by junior Heidi Zuchowski to make it 3-0.
Wellsboro added two more runs in the top of the 2nd as freshman Jena Boyce doubled. Junior Hailey Neal singled in the next at bat and junior Tiana Lecker brought Boyce home as she grounded out to second. Tremper later scored Neal on her second hit of the night to put Wellsboro up 5-0.
Athens got a run back in the bottom of the 4th to cut the score to 5-1, but Wellsboro added two more insurance runs in the top of the 5th. Tremper led off the inning with her third single of the afternoon. A double by freshman Kerrah Clymer moved her into scoring position for Brought, who tripled to score both Tremper and Clymer for the game's final runs.
Tremper led Wellsboro with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate to give her 11 hits on the season. Clymer and Brought each recorded two hits and scored runs, with Boyce, Adams, and Neal picking up the remaining hits. Brought (4), Zuchowski, Lecker, and Tremper also added RBI's on the afternoon.
Brought went the distance on the mound for her third win of the season. In 7 innings of work she scattered 3 hits, walked 4, allowed an earned run, but struck out 12.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 3-1 (3-1 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Friday, April 13 on the road in Towanda.
