Senior Kaleb Smith captured a first place finish in the 220 lbs. weight class at the North Sectional Tournament on Saturday, February 18.
Smith, the #3 seed, won his opening round match against #6 Dylan Troncone (Williamson) with a 23 second pin and later upset #2 seed Seth Forbes (Northeast Bradford) with a 19-4 tech fall in 4:36 to advance to the finals. In the finals, Smith squared off against Wyalusing's Cody Tunnicliff, the top seed for the weight class, and scored a 4-2 decision to win the class.
Sophomore Hunter Brown finished 4th on the afternoon at 195 lbs. Brown won a 5-0 decision over Sullivan County's Jared Houck in his first match, then was pinned by Wyalusing's Mike Wilcox in 1:04. Brown advanced the the third place match with a 8-0 major decision against Canton's Christian Ward before falling to NEB's Dawson Brown in 1:56.
Sophomore Jared Moreno lost his first match, a 14-7 decision, after a first round bye to North Penn-Liberty's Judson Wise at 160 lbs., then scored a 3-0 decision over Sullivan County's Dakota Pedro, then was pinned in 3:18 by Troy's Tyler Williams to end his day.
At 152 lbs., freshman Aidan Hauser went 1-2. Hauser was pinned by Sullivan County's Ian McEwan in 59 seconds. Hauser then pulled out an 11-9 decision against Towanda's Skyler Allen before getting pinned in 1:57 by Canton's Timmy Ward.
At 145 lbs., senior Caleb Sinkler lost a 4-2 decision to North Penn-Liberty's Cameron Andrews in his first match, then pinned Sullivan County's Jacoby Fitzgerald in 2:49 before getting pinned by Wyalusing's Joe Doss in 4:51.
Sophomore Robert Brown had a tough day, dropping both of his matches at 285 lbs. Brown lost an 8-4 decision to Sullivan County's Jeremy Houck in his first match and lost a 3-1 decision to Athens' Gavin Corino.
