The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team scored nine combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pick up a 12-1 win over Athens on Wednesday, May 3.

Freshman Ryann Adams led off with a walk and junior Alyssa Yungwirth singled before junior Sydney Tremper signled to score Yungwirth to make it 2-0 after Adams scored. Wellsboro increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third as Adams scored for the second time of the night on a RBI single by junior Brianne Keane.
Athens scored their lone run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1 before the Lady Hornets put things out of reach with nine runs in the final two innings.
With freshman Cathryn Brought and Keane on by error, sophomore Hailey Neal hit an RBI single to score Brought to make it 4-1, then after a walk by junior Kailee Clymer to load the bases, sophomore Heidi Zuchowski doubled to score all three to make it 7-1. In the seventh, Adams scored on an RBI double by Tremper to make it 8-1, Tremper and Keane would both score to make it 10-1, and a single by Zuchowski scored Neal and Clymer to make it 12-1.
"I was very pleased with our teams effort tonight," said head coach Ron Brought. "The girls made plays when they had to and kept tacking on runs. Again, we added in runs in 4 of the 6 innings. We were patient at the plate and drew 6 walks to go with our 10 hits. Athens kept things interesting by getting runners on every inning. Our girls responded well to having to play under different situations each inning."
Zuchowski finished 2-for-2 at the plate, Tremper was 3-for-4, Yungwirth was 2-for-3 with a double, and Adams, Keane, and Neal rounded out the Lady Hornets' 10 hits on the afternoon. Zuchowski had 5 RBI's, Tremper had 2, and Keane and Neal had one each.
Yungwirth picked up her second straight win in as many days as she scattered 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 7 on 99 pitches.
The Lady Hornets are now 11-1 (10-1 NTL Large School Division) and travel to Wyalusing today.
