The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team closed out the 2017 regular season with a 6-4 win over Troy on Saturday, May 20.
"I am extremely proud of our girls and the season they put together," said head coach Ron Brought. "17-2 overall (14-1 in the NTL) is a great accomplishment and hopefully will be followed by success in the playoffs."
The Lady Hornets started the game with two quick runs in the bottom of the first. After freshman Ryann Adams reached on an error to leadoff junior Alyssa Yungwirth hit a two-run home run, the third of her career, to make the score 2-0.
Troy tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third, but Wellsboro quickly retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Yungwirth singled to leadoff the inning, freshman Cathryn Brought also singled, and a single by junior Brianne Keane scored Yungwirth to make it 3-2. Later, a single by freshman Rileigh Gerges scored Brought and Keane to make it 5-2.
Wellsboro's final run came in the bottom of the sixth. Gerges led off the inning with a walk and was adanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Lauren Singer. Gerges scored on an RBI-single by Adams to put Wellsboro up 6-2.
Troy would score two runs in the top of the seventh to make it 6-4, but the Lady Hornets worked themselves out of the jam for the win.
Gerges was 2-for-2 with a walk, Keane was 2-for-3, and Yungwirth was 2-for-4. Adams and Brought added the other hits. Sophomore Hailey Neal also drew a walk.
Yungwirth went the distance on the mound for the win as she scattered 5 hits and a walk while allowing 4 runs (2 earned). Yungwirth also struck out 10 of the 31 batters she faced for her 10th 10+ strikeout game of the season.
The Hornets end the regular season at 17-2 and are the #2 seed in District IV Class AAA playoffs. The Lady Hornets host #7 Bloomsburg on Tuesday, May 23 at 4:30 p.m.
