Senior Jenny Young announced her decision to continue her softball career next year at Division III Houghton College while majoring in Elementary Education on Thursday, April 7.
"I'm very excited to go to Houghton next year," Young said. "I got to meet the head coach when she was still an assistant and did an overnight with the team and got to really know all of them. I really liked that it was a Christian college, and was originally looking into playing soccer but got involved with the softball program and it all kind of fell together."
Young has a career batting average of 0.310 (45-for-154), 20 RBI's, and 12 stolen bases, and was a member of last year's District IV Class AA championship team, the first in Wellsboro history.
For Wellsboro head coach Greg Carr, Young is now the third member of that championship team (Jordan Butters and Sarah Ingerick), second member of the Class of 2016 (Ingerick), and eighth player to play at the next level in his time as head coach.
"It just shows how successful we've been the last few years," commented Carr. "Anytime you can get one of the girls to go onto the next level to compete in something she truly loves to do and to go to the college that she truly wanted to go to is something that her and her family are very proud of her. She's a great kid with really great parents and it's been a real pleasure to coach her the last six or seven years. I don't think she's fully found her talent yet and I wish her nothing but the best."
