The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team needed 8 innings to beat South Williamsport 1-0 for their fifth straight win on Thursday, May 19.
The Lady Hornets struggled at the plate as they only mustered 6 hits on the night, but came through in the clutch for the third time this week. With the game tied 0-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth, senior Jenny Young and sophomore Sydney Tremper had back-to-back singles to get on base. Young then scored the winning run on an error by South Williamsport on a grounder by senior Darci Warriner.
Sophomore Alyssa Yungwirth picked up her third win of the week as she threw a two-hit complete game with 2 walks and 9 strikeouts. Yungwirth is now 9-3 on the year and has struck out 118 of the 310 batters she's faced this year.
Tremper and senior Sarah Ingerick each had two hits on the night, with Ingerick's being a double, while Young and Yungwirth added the Lady Hornets' other two hits.
Wellsboro improves to 16-3 overall on the year with the win and has locked up the No. 3 seed when District IV AA playoffs start next week. The Lady Hornets are back in action for their final regular season game later today as they resume a rain-stopped game against Coudersport.
