The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team need extra innings, but defeated Jersey Shore 1-0 in the 10th on Monday, May 16.
The Lady Hornets struggled at the plate as they were held to just 4 team hits. With the score tied at 0-0 heading into the 10th inning, senior Darci Warriner started the inning out on second base. Senior Alexa Singer put down a sacrifice bunt to move Warriner to third, then sophomore Alyssa Yungwirth flew to right. Once Shore's right fielder caught the ball, Warriner made her way towards home plate and forced a bad throw allowing her to score the game's only run.
In the bottom of the 10th, Jersey Shore moved their lead runner over to third base on a sacrifice bunt, but the next batter popped up to sophomore Brianne Keane, then Yungwirth struck out Shore's final batter with a 3-2 count.
Singer started on the mound for Wellsboro, and pitched the first 6 innings. Singers struck out 5, walked one, and allowed 3 hits on 64 pitches. Yungwirth came on in relief for the final 4 innings, giving up 2 hits and striking out 7 batters to pick up the win.
Sophomore Sydney Tremper went 2-for-4 to lead Wellsboro at the plate and Keane and Yungwirth added Wellsboro's other 2 hits.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 14-3 and locks up their second straight NTL Division 1 title. The Lady Hornets will be back in action this afternoon as they host Northeast Bradford on Senior Night.
