The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team split two games to take home third place at the NEB softball tournament on Saturday, April 23.
In the first game the Lady Hornets fell to Montrose 1-0. Wellsboro scattered 5 hits on the afternoon and left 6 runners on base. Montrose scored their only run of the game in the sixth. Seniors Jenny Young and Darci Warriner, and sophomores Sydney Tremper, Alyssa Yungwirth, and freshman Emma Poirier all had hits on the day.
Yungwirth started and pitched a complete game, allowing the one run, 4 hits, and 6 strikeouts in 7 innings of work.
In game two, Wellsboro beat Susquehanna 9-1. Wellsboro did all their damage in the first two innings. The Hornets scored 5 runs in the first inning as Young, Tremper, senior Sarah Ingerick, Warriner, and Yungwirth all crossed home plate. Young, Tremper, Ingerick, and junior Bridget Kennedy, who picked up her first career Varsity hit, all scored in the second inning.
Young went 1-for-2 and scored 2 runs, Ingerick was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored, senior Alexa Singer was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI's, Yungwirth was 1-for-3 with a double, and Kenendy was 1-for-2. Singer pitched a complete game giving up 1 run (earned) on 2 hits with 7 strikeouts for her 31st career win.
The Lady Hornets are now 6-2 on the year. The team will be back in action tomorrow on the road in Wyalusing.
