The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team began defense of their 2015 District IV and NTL titles with a 17-2 win over Sayre on Tuesday, March 29.
The Lady Hornets held a 2-1 lead after the first inning before scoring 10 runs in the next two combined innings to put the game out of reach. Wellsboro then scored three more runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to end it.
Senior Sarah Ingerick went 4-for-5 with a double to lead the team at the plate with 5 RBI's and 3 runs. Senior Jenny Young went a perfect 3-for-3 with 2 RBI's and 4 runs scored, and senior Darci Warriner went 3-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBI's. Senior Alexa Singer, freshmen Heidi Zuchowski, Kaytee Kemp, and Emma Poirier, and sophomore Brianne Keane also added hits on the night.
Poirier scored 3 runs on the night, sophomore Kailee Clymer scored 2, and Zuchowski, Kemp, Keane, and sophomores Sydney Tremper and Alyssa Yungwirth each added runs.
Singer started and picked up her first win of the season with Yungwirth coming on in relief. The two combined to strike out 11 batters while only allowing 5 total hits.
The win starts the Lady Hornets at 1-0 for the year. The team will be back in action on Monday, April 4 against Northeast Bradford in their home opener.
