The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team lost their first game of the season to Athens in extra innings on Tuesday, April 19.
Senior Jenny Young scored the Lady Hornets' lone run in the first inning for an early lead, but Athens tied it in the bottom of the second. Wellsboro then took the lead in the top of the 5th as sophomore Kailee Clymer crossed home plate, but Athens again took the lead in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to make it 3-2, Wildcats.
Freshman Emma Poirier tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth to send it to extra innings before Athens won in the eighth.
Sophomore Sydney Tremper led Wellsboro at the plate with 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Senior Sarah Ingerick was 1-for-4, Young was 1-for-3, Poirier was 1-for-4, Clymer finished 1-for-2, and sophomore Alyssa Yungwirth was 1-for-3.
Senior Alexa Singer started and pitched the first 5 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts. Yungwirth came on in relief for the final 3 innings, striking out 2 batters, and giving up 1 run on 1 hit for her first career loss (11-1).
The Middle School team was also in action, and lost 12-11 to Cowanesque Valley to bring their record to 1-4 on the year. Cathryn Brought struck out 13 on the mound and the young Hornets had 5 total hits in the game.
The Varsity team's loss snaps a five-game winning streak and ends the Lady Hornets' quest for an undefeated season. The team is now 5-1, and will be back in action on Saturday, April 23 in the Northeast Bradford tournament.
