Lady Hornets win NEB softball tournament

The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team took home the Northeast Bradford tournament title on Saturday, April 25.

In the first game, Wellsboro beat Tunkhannock 11-10. A five-run third inning found the Lady Hornets trailing, but they tied the game up with four runs in the fourth inning. Tunkhannock would regain the lead with a run in the fifth and three in the sixth, but the Hornets came from behind for the win in dramatic fashion as Junior Sarah Ingerick hit a walk-off three-run home run.

Junior Jenny Young was 3-for-5 in the game with three runs scored, while Junior Darci Warriner was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI's and two runs. Freshman Alyssa Yungwirth was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs, Ingerick was 2-for-5 with 3 RBI's and a run scored, Junior Alexa Singer was 2-for-3 with a double, run scored, and an RBI, Senior Paige Carr had a double with an RBI, Seniors Peyton Wilson and Jordan Butters also had hits.

Singer pitched a complete game on the mound for the Lady Hornets as she allowed 10 runs (three earned) with 15 hits, a walk and strikeout on 105 pitches.

In the championship game, Wellsboro faced the hosts, Northeast Bradford, after they beat Mt. View 8-5 in their opening game. Northeast Bradford jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Wellsboro got on the scoreboard with two runs in the fifth inning.

A single by Warriner brought Singer home to cut Northeast Bradford's lead to 4-3 in the sixth inning, then Freshman Sydney Tremper hit a two-run double to give the Lady Hornets the victory.

Singer was 2-for-3 with a run, Young was 1-for-4, Tremper was 2-for-2, Warriner was 1-for-2 with a double and RBI, Butters was 1-for-3, and Carr was 2-for-3. Yungwirth pitched a complete game going seven innings, giving up four runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts on 92 pitches.

Young, Yungwirth, and Carr were named to the all-tournament team, and Warriner was named tournament MVP.

With the wins, the Lady Hornets improve their record to 9-1 (3-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Tuesday, April 28 as they travel to Wyalusing.
