The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team needed 10 innings to defeat Northeast Bradford 6-5 on Thursday, April 30.
Northeast jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as they scored one runs in the first and three in the second innings. Wellsboro would get one run back in the fourth inning as Junior Alexa Singer corssed home plate, but that's all they would get until the seventh inning.
In the seventh, Junior Darci Warriner reached on an error to get on base and after singles by Senior Baylea Lehman and Junior Jenny Young, Warriner crossed home to make it 4-2. After a groundout, Junior Sarah Ingerick hit a two-run single that scored Lehman and Young to tie the game at 4-4.
The game remained tied into the 10th inning. In the top of the 10th, Senior Peyton Wilson started on second for the international tiebreaker rule. Senior Jordan Butters moved Wilson to third on a fly out, and after Warriner walked and stole second there were runners on second and third. After a fly-out, Young hit a ground ball that resulted in an error allowing both Wilson and Warriner to score to end the game.
Young was 3-for-5 on the night with 2 RBI's, Singer was 2-for-5 with a double, Lehman was 1-for-4, Ingerick was 1-for-4 with two RBI's, Wilson was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Senior Paige Carr was 1-for-4, and Freshman Alyssa Yungwirth was 1-for-6 with an RBI.
Singer picked up her eighth win of the year as she pitched a complete game, giving up four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with two doubles, a home run, a walk, and five strikeouts.
The win extends the Lady Hornets' win streak to 11 games and they improve to 12-1 (5-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action this afternoon as they host Wyalusing.
