The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team defeated South Williamsport 1-0 for the second time in a week in the second round of District IV Class AA playoffs on Thursday, May 21.
The game turned out to be a pitchers duel as Freshman Alyssa Yungwirth and South Williamsport’s Anna Steer allowed only three hits each on the night.
After three scoreless innings, South Williamsport had a chance to score in the top of the fourth inning on a deep hit to center field, but Junior Jenny Young made a perfect throw to Senior Paige Carr to tag the runner out at home preventing the run.
After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning for South, the Lady Hornets came alive in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Junior Alexa Singer picked up her only hit of the night on a single to first base before advancing to second on a Carr sacrifice bunt. Senior Jordan Butters then sent a shot to left field to score Singer for the game's only run, giving the Lady Hornets the win.
Young, Singer, and Butters were all 1-for-3 on the night, and Yungwirth picked up her eighth win of the year as she pitched a complete game and struck out nine batters.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 19-2. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, May 26 as they take on Central Columbia at Moser Complex in Watsontown.
