The Wellsboro Varsity Wrestling team participated in the Jersey Shore Duals on Saturday, January 17.
The Hornets lost to Berwick 51-12. Senior Jack Chambers lost a 5-2 decision to Sean McCole at 152 lbs., Junior Vincent DeRita was pinned in 1:06 by Kyle Crane at 160 lbs., and Freshman Cory Busch was pinned in 48 seconds by Alec Talanca at 126 lbs. Sophomore Kaleb Smith picked up a forfeit at 220 lbs. and Junior Owen Covert pinned Dalton Hosler in 1:29 at 285 lbs.
Against Tunkhannock, the Hornets lost 66-18. Busch was pinned in 1:17 against Dakota Quick at 126 lbs., DeRita was pinned by Jarod Bernosky in 2:40 at 160 lbs., and the rest of the points were lost by forfeit. Chambers picked up a win at 152 lbs. by pinning Lucas Stage in 2:36, Smith scored a fall over Josh Flaherty in 1:07 at 220 lbs., and Covert pinned Bryce Brown in 2:42 at 285 lbs.
Against Wyoming Area, the Hornets lost 54-12. Smith and Covert each recorded forfeits for the only wins, while Busch, Chambers, and DeRita were all pinned.
The Hornets were shut out 84-0, with all members losing by pin fall. Against host Jersey Shore, the Hornets lost 72-8. Chambers won a 12-6 decision over Chris Bashaw at 152 lbs. and Covert scored a technical fall over Brady Ferguson at 285 lbs.
With the losses, the Hornets fall to 1-16 (0-6 NTL). The team will be back in action on Tuesday, January 20 as they travel to Athens.
