The Wellsboro Varsity softball team pounded out five home runs en route to a 10-5 win against Southern Columbia in the first round of District IV Class AA playoffs on Thursday, May 22.
Wellsboro found itself trailing 3-2 heading into the third inning when Sophomore Sarah Ingerick tied the game at 3-3 with a solo home run to center field. Then, after one out, Junior Jordan Butters hit the first of her two monstrous home runs with a line drive over the left field fence that put Wellsboro up 4-3.
The Lady Hornets increased their lead to 5-3 in the fourth when Junior Peyton Wilson belted a solo home run to center field. Wellsboro put the game away in the fifth inning with a four-run outburst on a pair of two-run homers that all but took the wind out of the Tigers' sails. Senior Maggie Smith opened the inning with a single and Butters followed with her second home run of the contest for a 7-3 advantage. Sophomore Alexa Singer followed with a single and Junior Paige Carr hit a two-run home run to clinch the game.
Singer was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Smith was 1-for-4 with a run scored, Sophomore Darci Warriner was 2-for-4 with a double, Senior Brooke Kohler was 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, Ingerick was 2-for-4 with a home run, Wilson was 1-for-5 with a home run, Butters was 2-for-2 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI's, and Carr was 2-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI's.
Singer started on the mound and earned the win. The sophomore went 2 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on three hits while striking out one. Kohler came on in relief to earn the save.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 15-5. The team advances to the second round of playoffs and will take on Central Columbia on Tuesday, May 27 at Elm Park in Williamsport at 5:30 p.m.
