The Wellsboro Varsity girls cross country team surprised NTL champion Mansfield by coming home with a 1st place finish in the NTL Coaches Meet on Saturday.
The Lady Hornets and Mansfield each finished with 52 team points, but Wellsboro won the tie-breaker thanks to a better finish out of the sixth place runner.
Mansfield's Violet Learn won the race Saturday with a time of 19:43. Sophomore Jada Jackson was the top finisher for the Lady Hornets, coming home 4th in a time of 20:39. Fellow Sophomores Jordyn Coffee, Camryn Keane, and Samantha Bailey finshed behind Jackson. Coffee finished 10th (21:42), Keane was 13th (21:57), and Bailey was 14th (22:02).
Rounding out the rest of the Lady Hornet runners were Senior Charlotte Worthington in 19th (22:46), Junior Annie Sweeney in 20th (22:47), Junior Caitlynn Butler in 25th (23:08), Freshman Janessa Davis in 39th (24:06), and Senior Baylee Mann in 57th (25:58).
In the boys race, the Hornets finished 9th with 198 team points. Senior Joey Doganiero was the top finisher for the Hornets in 11th at 17:37 followed by Freshman Joey Messmer in 40th (19:48), Junior Dalton Messmer in 45th (20:13), Sophomore David Zavetsky in 54th (20:44), and Freshman Alden Weiner in 55th (20:44).
In the Middle School races, both Wellsboro teams finished third on the day. The boys scored 71 team points and the girls scored 59.
