The Wellsboro Varsity softball team started the 2013 at the Northeast Bradford tournament and fell to the hosts in the championship game.
In the first game, the Lady Hornets downed Tunkhannock, 7-4 on the back of four home runs. Junior Maggie Smith had a pair of home runs as she went 3-for-3 with four RBI's and two runs. Sophomore Paige Carr and Freshman Sarah Ingerick hit the other two home runs.
Junior Brooke Kohler had two hits (one double) and scored two runs, and Freshman Jenny Young scored a run. Freshman Alexa Singer struke out one, allowed seven hits, and walked one batter on her way to the win.
In the championship game against Northeast Bradford, the Lady Hornets lost 8-4. All four runs all came in the fourth inning as Smith led off with a single and Carr followed with a single. A fielder's choice put Freshman Darci Warriner on first and Carr on second.
With two outs Sophomore Baylea Lehman singled to load the bases and Singer hit a grand slam to left field to cut the deficit to 7-4. The Hornets had a runner in scoring position in each of the last three innings, but left them all stranded.
Kohler struck out four and walked none and allowed 11 hits in the game.
Singer was 3-for-3 with the grand slam, four RBI's and a run scored. Carr and Smith each had two hits, each of them getting a double for one of the hits, and Carr scored a run.
Kohler had two hits and Young and Lehman each had a hit, with Lehman scoring a run, while Warriner scored a run.
The Lady Hornets are now 1-1 on the year, and will start NTL West play on Monday, April 8 as they host Liberty.
