The Wellsboro Green Hornets dropped their first game of the 2009 season to the Troy Trojans Friday night in Wellsboro. After picking up a win in week one against the Cowanesque Valley Indians by controlling the line of scrimmage, Wellsboro couldn't manage to contain the Trojans running attack.
Troy jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead from long runs by Beau Parker. The second quarter didn't fare any better, as Troy broke off more long runs and returned an interception for a touchdown to push the lead to 47-0.
Wellsboro was able to avoid being shut out, as Senior Running Back Richie Straniere scored on a five yard run in the fourth quarter after Junior Running Back Ryan Moss broke free to get the Hornets into scoring distance. Later in the period, Senior Wide Receiver Nathan Bair hauled in a pass from Freshman Quarterback Ben Shaw for 26 yards. Ryan Moss added the two-point conversion to end the scoring. Moss led all Wellsboro rushers with 64 yards on six carries.
The loss drops Wellsboro's record to 1-1 on the year. The Hornets will be in action again next Friday as they travel to Lewisburg to face the Green Dragons at Bucknell Unversity. Use the Interactive Map for driving directions to the stadium.
