The Wellsboro Hornets traveled to Sayre Friday night to take on the Redskins in a soggy battle at the Lockhart Street Bowl. Sayre struck first and held a 13-0 lead after the first quarter. Wellsboro battled back behind Freshman Quarterback Ben Shaw. Shaw led the Hornets down to the one-yard line where Junior Running Back Ryan Moss punched the ball in for the Hornets' first score of the game.
Sayre struck two more times before the end of the half thanks to Rob Rought. Rought scored on a 51 yard run and returned an interception for a touchdown on Wellsboro's ensuing drive. After Rought's two touchdowns, Senior Aaron Moss closed the score to 25-12 on his seven yard touchdown run. Sayre would strike again before the end of the half and pushed their lead to 32-12.
Wellsboro fought back in the second half as Shaw connected with Junior Wide Receiver Ethan Callahan on a 53 yard pass. Sophomores Thomas Johnston and Chase Barnes scored for the Hornets in the closing minutes of the game, but it was too little too late as Sayre was able to hold on for their first win against Wellsboro since 2000.
The Hornets will look to rebound next week against Towanda on Homecoming Night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
