The 2008 Wellsboro Green Hornets ended their season Saturday night after loosing to the Athens Wildcats 43-6 in the first round of the District 4 Class AA Playoffs. The Hornets end the season with a 7-4 record and finished third in the NTL Large School Division behind Athens and Towanda.
Despite the loss, the 2008 Hornets have accomplished what no other Wellsboro team has achieved in a long time. Before this week's contest, Wellsboro has not had a winning record since the 1996 season (6-3) and has not made the playoffs since the 1995 season. In addition to those feats, Wellsboro has also produced another 1,000 yard rusher. Senior Fullback Pat Driebelbies broke the 1,000 yard mark in his last career game, and is the first Hornet runner to achieve this feat since Derek Harsch in 2001.
Driebelbies now joins an elite group of runners that includes Harsch, Jamie Jones, Matt Kennedy, Russ Manney, Ian Carson, Chris Morral, Jason Kennedy, Tim Driebelbies, John Driebelbies (Pat's father), Linford Jones, and others.
