In a hard fought contest in a hostile environment, the Wellsboro Hornets lost to the North Penn Panthers, 24-14. With an eighth seed in District IV Class AA playoffs, Wellsboro needed to beat the Panthers to have any chance of making the playoffs. With the loss, the Hornets are out of the District playoff race, but may still make Eastern Conference Playoffs.
The Hornets came prepared to do battle last night, as Matt Weaver intercepted a Panther pass to give the Hornets their first possession on the night. To cap the drive, Cameron Jones found a wide open Steve Mengee in the back of the end zone for the first score of the night.
North Penn would not allow the Hornets to score again until midway through the fourth quarter, when Jones and Mengee connected again in the back of the end zone. With the win, the Panthers retain the Morton Jones Trophy for yet another year.
Check the site often this weekend, because as soon as there is any information on Eastern Conference Playoffs, WellsboroFootball.com will have all of the information.
