The Wellsboro Green Hornets traveled to Montgomery Friday night to face the Red Raiders in an NTL league matchup. The Hornets and the Red Raiders have only faced off twice before in game situations. The last meeting took place in 2003, where Wellsboro won, 50-0.
The start of the game favored the Hornets, as the defense quickly forced a three-and-out, causing Montgomery to punt. On the ensuing offensive drive, Wellsboro scored their first touchdown on the evening to go ahead 7-0. Both teams struggled after that, as penalties killed potential Wellsboro scoring drives. At the half, Wellsboro remained on top 7-0.
The second half featured more offensive scoring from the Hornets, as Senior Running Back Jesse Tom and Sophomore Tigh End Mitch Christman added touchdowns. Pat Driebelbies also scored on the night, recovering a blocked punt by Chris Copp down near the end zone. Montgomery did not give up though, as they started a drive halfway through the fourth quarter. The drive stalled however, as Senior Safety Chet Johnson intercepted a pass inside the five-yard line, sealing the shutout victory for the Hornets.
Wellsboro returns home to finish the remainder of the 2006 season, facing Cowanesque Valley, Wyalusing, and bitter rival North Penn. Wellsboro returns to action Friday for their Homecoming game against the Cowanesque Valley Indians.
